Teaser Answer: More Than You Probably Thought

This young Peregrine Falcon is one of four birds on the State's Endangered Species List that nest in the Meadowlands.

Here's the full monte of nesting Meadowlands birds on the state's Endangered, Threatened, and Species of Special Concern lists:

Endangered ( 4):  Pied-billed Grebe, Peregrine Falcon, Least Tern, Northern Harrier.

Threatened (4):  Osprey, Savannah Sparrow, Yellow-crowned Night Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron.

Special Concern (10): American Kestrel, Barn Owl,Brown Thrasher, Common Gallinule (moorhen), Common Nighthawk, Horned lark, Least Bittern, Saltmarsh  Sparrow, Spotted Sandpiper, Virginia Rail.

    i saw this guy week& a half ago walking by the flags. he was on the ground by the path, hopped on a near tree limb and then flew away. awesome bird!

    Looks to me like black over green 25/W. It’s not in the database yet because it is this year’s bird.

    Yes, we reported the band, and the NYS DEC replied: “This bird, a male, is from a bridge nest on the northern tip of Manhattan, one of three young raised there this year. It was treated for frounce by a rehabber and released near its nest site on June 10, 2011. Good to know it is doing well! Thanks.”
