5 Great July Events: Save the dates!

We have plenty of great events coming up in July, so save the dates now.

On Sunday, July 1, we have a guided DeKorte walk at 10 a.m. and a Butterflies for Beginners event at 1 p.m.

On Tuesday, July 17, we have a Birding by Pontoon Boat trip at 10 a.m. at River Barge Park.

Sunday, July 22, is our 3rd Annual Butterfly Day at DeKorte.

And Wednesday, July 25, is Moth Night.

All these events are done in conjunction with the Bergen County Audubon Society.

Sunday, July 1, 10 a.m.
First-Sunday-of-the-Month Nature Walk with the NJMC and BCAS

This free two-hour guided nature walk meets inside the Meadowlands Environment Center in DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst, and runs from 10 a.m. We’ll walk around the square-mile park, looking for Black Skimmers, butterflies and various egrets and herons. The walk is run by the N.J. Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society. Check meadowblog.net for last-minute updates and weather advisories. Butterflies for Beginners with the NJMC and BCAS
Join us for a 30-minute talk and slide show about Butterflies, and then go looking for butterflies around DeKorte Park. We’ll meet inside the Meadowlands Environment Center in DeKorte Park at 1 p.m. The event is run by the N.J. Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society. Third-Tuesday-of-the-Month Special Event:
Pontoon Boat Birding Cruise with the NJMC and BCAS

This is a two-hour birding trip along the Hackensack River and its marshes. The two-hour guided trip has a suggested donation of $15 per person. We’ll look for peregrine falcons, ospreys, northern harriers, various egrets and herons, plus diamondback terrapins. Nature photographers are welcome, but you must be unobtrusive (no tripods). The event is run by the N.J. Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society. Check meadowblog.net for last-minute updates and weather advisories. Sunday, July 22, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Third Annual Butterfly Day
The Meadowlands Commission is hosting this free one-day butterfly fest at DeKorte Park. In addition to butterfly walks for the whole family, there’ll be brief introductory slide shows on the Butterflies of DeKorte Park, tables with loads of information on butterfly identification, binoculars and gardening to attract butterflies – plus contests and great door prizes. Butterfly Day is run by the N.J. Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society, with a huge assist from the Northern New Jersey Chapter of the North American Butterfly Association. Wednesday, July 25,  8:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Bonus Event: Moth Night, DeKorte Park
Learn all about moths — those amazing cousins of butterflies, at the Meadowlands’ first-ever Moth Night. We’ll hear a short talk by expert David Moskowitz, the organizer of National Moth Week, and use a mercury vapor lamp and white sheet to attract and then identify the various species. The goal of the event – part of National Moth week — is to raise awareness of these seldom seen insects and to celebrate biodiversity. The walk meets inside the Meadowlands Environment Center. This free family-friendly event is sponsored by the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission and Bergen County Audubon Society. Check meadowblog.net for last-minute weather updates.
