Yes, a red-breasted merganser all right; nice and late. Note how close to the base of the bill the nostril is.
Was its wing constantly in that position? It could be injured and that’s why it’s still here. Just a possibility.
The merganser was in the process of taking to flight as I took the shot which explains the lift in one of its wings.
