Regina Geoghan reports:
Yesterday along Disposal Road: Black Swallowtail, Tiger Swallowtail, Viceroy, Skippers.
Today Disposal Road: American Lady, Skippers, one Monarch that flew over.
Today DeKorte: Silver-spotted Skippers, Comma, E.Tiger Swallowtail, Monarch, Red Admirals,
Great day, great group, great birds. We apologize to all the participants for the overabundance of Diamondback Terrapins (a smattering are pictured above) that were constantly spoiling everyone’s view of the shoreline.
Highlights included Clapper Rail, young Peregrines, YC and BC Night Herons, and lots of shorebirds. We also had a Boat-tailed Grackle, below.
Some 150 people attended last night’s 3rd annual Moth Night at DeKorte Park. They got to hear a great talk about moths by National Moth Week’s Elena Tartaglia, and then got to see some really cool moths.
Patrick Carney of Bergen County Audubon Society was nice enough to share his photos of some of the cool moths we saw last night.
If you click on each of the small pix below, you’ll see a larger shot of the moth, labeled. There are some crazy and beautiful moths.
(Thanks, Patrick, thanks to all who attended, and a huge thanks to the wonderful folks at National Moth Week!)
Mickey and Elaine Raine passed along some of the butterfly pix they took at DeKorte this past weekend. We hope it’s a sneak preview for Sunday. The great Spangled Fritillary is especially nice!
(Thanks, Mickey and Elaine!)

Great NJMC pontoon-boat cruise Saturday morning. We saw 6 Clapper Rails (3 adults 3 juvs.), 4 Least Terns, many Yellow-Crown Night Herons, Short-Billed Dowitcher, 6 Peregrines, 7 Ospreys, Skimmers and more.
Some of Allan’s pix are posted here. (Thanks, Allan!)
We are looking forward to another nifty Moth Night at DeKorte Park — we’re a proud participant of National Moth Week.
The free event runs from 8:30 to 11 p.m., and features a Moth Talk at 8:45 by National Moth Week’s Elena Tartaglia.
The NMW folks will be setting up their moth-attracting lights near the Meadowlands Environment Center.
What to bring: Flashlights, bug spray, comfortable shoes, cameras, close-up binoculars if you have them.
If the first parking lot (by the guard booth) fills up, we will ask folks to park in the second lot by the administration building, so drivers should drive slowly and be extra careful of pedestrians, and folks should be aware of vehicles. (No running!)
Directions to DeKorte Park are on the right side of this blog.
Moth Night is sponsored by the N.J. Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society.
Hope to see you tonight!
Liberty Valance, who participates in so many of our nature events, is also an accomplished potter.
A Long Island newspaper did a nifty writeup about Liberty and her work — which often features Mill Creek Marsh. (She did some amazing Snowy Owl bowls this past winter.)
