Don Torino’s Life in the Meadowlands: Helping Your Backyard Birds Through the Coming Winter
As we enter the most desperate time of year for our birds I thought I would share some helpful tips for getting our backyard birds through winter as best we can.
As we lose more and more natural places to development and the land that is left may lack the biodiversity needed to sustain wildlife, our backyards become that much more important to the survival of many birds and other wildlife.
Small and seemingly insignificant backyards now become an oasis for birds that will depend on your yard to make it through the harsh winter months.
Harrier Meadow Walk Tomorrow (Oct. 18)!!!
Join the Bergen County Audubon Society for a guided nature walk through Harrier Meadow in North Arlington from 10 am to noon tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 18. The pristine natural area is normally closed to the public, even more reason not to miss this opportunity!
Will Hugo the Hudsonian Godwit, recently photographed by NJSEA naturalists, still be there? Come along and find out!

Double Your Fun: Two Bergen Audubon Walks This Week!
You’ve got two chances this week to enjoy a Meadowlands nature walk led by the Bergen County Audubon Society.
Tomorrow, Tuesday Oct. 16, they’ll be at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst; on Thursday, Oct. 18 they move on up Disposal Road to Harrier Meadow in North Arlington. Both walks are 10 am to noon.
It’s a great way to experience DeKorte, the gem of the Meadowlands park system, and Harrier Meadow, a pristine natural area normally closed to the public. They’ll be keeping their eyes peeled for for fall migrants, waterfowl, shorebirds and more.
