Exciting news: Partnership with Bergen County Audubon Society — and added nature events

The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission today announced a new partnership with the Bergen County Audubon Society to bring more nature walks and programs to the Commission’s expanding schedule.

 The partnership will offer free 90-minute nature walks on the first Sunday and third Tuesday of each month. The programs kick off with a bird walk at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst at 9 a.m. on Sunday, July 5.

 The Bergen County Audubon Society has been a leading nature group in the region for more than six decades, and the partnership also dovetails nicely with the NJMC’s 40th anniversary, a celebration of the region’s continuing environmental recovery.

 Sunday, July 5:  DeKorte Park Walk. 9 a.m. We’ll look for dragonflies and butterflies as well as shorebirds, swallows and herons.

Sunday, July 19:  Butterflies for Beginners. 1 p.m. Get started learning how to identify the Butterflies of the Meadowlands and the plants that attract them. Optics for butterflies and how to start your own backyard butterfly garden will be discussed, followed by walk.

Tuesday, July 21: DeKorte Park Walk. 9 a.m.  We’ll look for dragonflies and butterflies as well as shorebirds, swallows and herons.

Sunday, Aug. 2: DeKorte Park Walk. 1 p.m. We’ll again look for dragonflies and butterflies as well as shorebirds, swallows and herons.

Tuesday, August 18: Harrier Meadow walk. 1 p.m. We’ll explore the wildlife of this 70-acre wetlands site, usually off-limits to the public.
