We had a great birding cruise this morning, with four pontoon boats on the river and nearby marshes in search of unusual birds.
Different boats got different species, but all got good looks at the Kearny Osprey nest (left), as well as plenty of Yellow-crowned Night Herons by the Anderson Creek Marsh. We also saw plenty of Forster's Terns and assorted sandpipers. A big thank you to all who attended.
Later this week, if possible, we will post a list of birds some of us saw.
We are adding another birding trip on Tuesday, August 23, at 10 a.m. Call Gaby Bennett-Meany at 201-460-4640 for more info. At $15 suggested donation, these are the best bargains around.
You can book a cruise at another time, too — download the registration form, the rest of the summer schedule and details here:
Event listing follows.

Special Event: Pontoon Boat Birding Cruise with the NJMC and BCAS
This is a two-hour birding cruise along the Hackensack River and its marshes. The two-hour guided trip has a suggested donation of $15 per person. We’ll look for peregrine falcons, ospreys, northern harriers, various egrets and herons, plus diamondback terrapins. Nature photographers are welcome, but you must be unobtrusive (no tripods). The event is run by the N.J. Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society. Check meadowblog.net for last-minute updates and weather advisories. Tour departs from the River Barge Park in Carlstadt. For pre-registration information or to rsvp, please contact Gaby Bennett-Meany at 201-460-4640.
It would be sweet if there could be a 5:30 p.m. birding trip. We might get to see some rails or bitterns. 😉

Curious if anything interesting was seen.
Will try to post a list next week — very hectic right now…. Thanks for asking.
