oh! i think i may have been calling viceroy butterflies monarchs all the while! is the only visual difference that lower black line that separates the orange color?
Beautiful Butterfly and photo. Someone posted a link to a Monarch Migration chart by Longitude and supposedly it peaks in Sept in our area. However I thought I saw a lot more Monarchs earlier last year. I did remember though, that we kept commenting on the number of Male Monarchs we were seeing. I think it was close to 90% males last year. I wonder why and I wonder how that is affecting the population. Its obvious it would affect the population, but I guess I was hoping there were more females in other areas.
I must also confess a lack or awareness of Viceroy, and mis-ID as Monarch. So much to learn.
But I think I did get Monarch at Mill Creek Marsh on June 19, 2013. See second and third photo in this set (which also includes some nice shots of Black Skimmer, Snowy Egret and Tree Swallows): http://www.flickr.com/photos/catfishjohn/sets/72157634644955967/
