Next BCAS Meadowlands Walk Is Sunday, Aug. 3. at DeKorte Park
Rise and shine with the Bergen County Audubon Society as they lead a walk through DeKorte Park, the gem of the Meadowlands park system. They’ll be on the lookout for migratory shorebirds, songbirds and wading birds. The walk goes from 10 a.m. to noon.

Reminder- Butterfly Day is Sunday, July 20!

Butterfly Day is just a couple days away! Join the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority and Bergen County Audubon Society as they present the 16th Annual Butterfly Day on Sunday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Richard W. DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst.
Butterfly Day is a family favorite, with a Butterfly Costume Contest, crafts and games for the kids. The day also includes guided walks, information tables and a talk on how you can attract butterflies in your own backyard.
DeKorte Park is located at 2 DeKorte Park Plaza, Lyndhurst.

McDowell Observatory Closed Tonight (July 16)
The Record Spotlights MRRI’s Acoustic Recording Units

The Record today ran a very informative article and photo gallery about the NJSEA Meadowlands Envirnonmental Research and Restoration Institute’s use of Acoustic Recording Units (ARUs). Scientists use the listening devices to record bird sounds, which are analyzed to determine many aspects of avian species’ behavior. By harnessing this technology, MRRI is able to discern how best to provide healthy habitats for birds.
Incredible Great Egret Alabaster Sculpture!

Thank you Patricia Wong! Patricia shared her fantastic alabaster sculpture of a Great Egret that she photographed at DeKorte Park. Patricia and her husband are frequent park visitors who love taking in the wildlife.
Patricia remarks: “The egret was carved from Alabaster stone based on my photos taken at DeKorte. A sculpture hammer, various chisels and files were used to create the Egret. I titled the sculpture WAITING…….

Milkweed and a Monarch Butterfly
Get acquainted with DeKorte Park’s majestic butterflies and the beautiful, native plants throughout the park with the Bergen County Audubon Society. The walk goes from 10 a.m. to noon.
Fast fact: Milkweed, a native plant found in the park, is the only plant on which Monarch butterflies lay eggs, an especially important fact as the species is in decline.
