We are going with Patrick Carney’s Teaser answer (Mourning Underwing) and Denise Farrell’s answer (Sweetheart Underwing).
Denise points out that both moths resemble the one in the photo, and adds: “Makes ‘confusing fall’ warblers seem easy. (Thanks, Patrick and Denise!)
Was it possible to see what color the “underwings” were? If they were sort of a coal black with a white edge, then it’s a Mourning, and if they were striped pink and black with a white edge than it’s a Sweetheart. I agree with Denise though, moths do make fall warblers seem easy.
Sorry — was not able to check… Thought it would have been impolite. Thanks for your help!
