We are still tabulating the results, but the Big Year is shaping up as a lot of fun — and a whole lot of birds. We hope to post the latest totals on Monday.

The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission  and the Bergen County Audubon Society will celebrate the opening of  River Barge Bark in Carlstadt on Saturday, May 19, with a day of free, family-friendly activities focused on raising awareness of the importance of environmental protection, conservation and keeping our waterways clean.

The events include free 30-minute guided boat rides on the NJMC's pontoon boats.

River Barge Park Day is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a rain date of Sunday, May 20.

Activities at the scenic, 5.5-acre park on the Hackensack River also include mini kayak lessons provided by REI, environmental education activities for children conducted by Meadowlands Environment Center educators and park tours.

There will also be bird watching, a live barn owl exhibit, environmental exhibitors, food vendors and more.

We thought we'd highlight the Midge here because this week's Tuesday Teaser featured the Midge almost Midge-size.

This guy was photographed at the NJMC Administration Building in DeKorte Park. Likely a part-timer since he had no ID.

The above photo by Marco Lips could have been of distant "pepper birds," a mixed flock of \European Sstarlings and Red-winged Blackbirds, but no.

It was a flock of pesky (but non-biting) Midges — which just might be Tree Swallows' meal of choice of these days.
