Our next free guided walk with Bergen County Audubon is on Tuesday, Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to noon, and it’s a terrific Tuesday two-fer — a walk in Harrier Meadow, plus a bird-banding demonstration there by NJMC Naturalist Mike Newhouse.
Harrier Meadow — where we recently saw that wing-tagged Great Egret — is usually closed to the public, and Mike’s bird-banding demos are always the best. Mike banded the mystery warbler pictured above on Tuesday — the same day we saw the tagged egret.
Details — and ID of mystery warbler — follow.
The bird is a Mourning Warbler.

Third-Tuesday-of-the-Month Bird Walk with the NJMC and BCAS
This walk starts with a bird-banding demonstration by NJMC Naturalist Mike Newhouse at the entrance to Harrier Meadow in North Arlington – where you’ll learn all about why the commission bands birds and what it has learned, and you’ll get some amazing up-close looks at birds. We’ll then walk around the 70-acre natural area, which is normally closed to the public, and look for herons, egrets, shorebirds, and ospreys and other raptors. Harrier Meadow is on Disposal Road near Schuyler Avenue. The walk is run by the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society. Check meadowblog.net for last-minute updates. You will have to sign a standard liability release that is good for NJMC/BCAS events throughout the year. To rsvp, contact Don Torino of the BCAS at greatauk4@aol.com or 201-230-4983.
