Each Monday, we post the upcoming events for the Meadowlands Commission and the Meadowlands Environment Center  through the upcoming weekend.

This week’s events are a talk on Horseshoe Crabs, an introduction to astronomy for children (sold out), and a program on historical maps of the Meadowlands.

Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2 – 3:30 p.m.
Horseshoe Crabs: Living Fossils –All ages
Horseshoe crabs were here before the rise and fall of the dinosaurs and still inhabit our bays.  Join Dr. Angela Cristini, Director of the Meadowlands Environment Center, and learn about how and why these crabs have outlasted many animals but are now in danger in New Jersey. Free.

Friday, Dec. 6, 7 – 8 p.m.
A Child’s Guide to the Universe – For ages 5-8
Bring your children for an evening of wonder at the William D. McDowell Observatory. After a brief introduction to the items they will see through the telescope, children will be introduced to the observatory and learn how its telescope works and how to use it.  The children will then get to view several celestial bodies, depending on weather conditions. Adults must accompany children. You must be able to climb 25 stairs to the Observatory. $5/person; $4/MEC members

Sunday, Dec. 8, 1 – 2:30 p.m
Mapping Out Meadowlands History – Program geared toward adults
Meadowlands Museum Trustee Frank Godlewski demonstrates how to use maps to help understand the evolution of the Meadowlands through time, including the development of the surrounding communities and marshes.
$5/person; $4/MEC members
