It’s striking to me that the cutesy nickname “gray ghost” has been largely transferred recently from the northern goshawk to the northern harrier. Does anyone know how and why and when that happened?
The male Northern Harrier has been called a Gray Ghost for as long as I can remember — my guess is the name transferred to the male Northern harrier because so few folks see Northern Goshawks, and Gray Ghost is a heckuva lot easier to say than male Northern Harrier…
