Many thanks to Chris Takacs for this great photo of a graceful Hummingbird approaching a Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis). The flower is one of more than 200 planted at the Lyndhurst Nature Reserve thanks to a generous donation by Michael Sherman.
Cardinal flowers produce tall spikes of bright red flowers between midsummer and early autumn that attract a variety of butterflies as well as hummingbirds. Cardinal flowers are native to wet meadows, marshes and stream banks, and prefer a wet soil.
