BOOK TALK: Our next talk and slide show on the NJMC’s coffee-table book “The Nature of the Meadowlands” is Tues., Nov. 26. at 1 p.m., for the Rutherford Golden Age Club at the Tamblyn Field Civic Center, 30 Woodland Avenue, Rutherford. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 201-438-5186. A Talk on North Arlington’s Schuyler Copper Mine: Join Joseph Macasek in the MEC on Tuesday, Nov. 26, from 2-3:30 p.m., for an introduction to one of the Meadowlands’ buried historical treasures. Located under a residential area of North Arlington, the Schuyler Copper Mine opened in 1719 and is the oldest copper mine in New Jersey. It was also the first mine in North America to use a steam engine to pump the minerals and other resources found beneath the surface. Although nothing remains of the mining operations above ground, the collapse of the underground shafts and tunnels caused damage as recently as 1989. $5/person; $4/MEC members. All ages. GREEN FRIDAY WALK: Looking for a great way to beat the “Black Friday” day-after-Thanksgiving shopping crush and work off that turkey dinner? Visit the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission’s DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst for a free “Green Friday” guided nature walk beginning at noon inside the Meadowlands Environment Center. The Nov. 29 event, sponsored by the NJMC and the Bergen County Audubon Society, will feature a walk on DeKorte Park’s Shore Walk and Lyndhurst Nature Reserve. The walk runs from noon to to 1:45 p.m. Bring a brownbag lunch if you like. FIRST SUNDAY WALK AND TALK: Sunday, Dec. 1, 10 a.m. This free two-hour program at DeKorte Park features a short talk and slide show on the raptors and winter waterfowl of the Meadowlands by the NJMC’s Jim Wright, followed by a walk along legendary Disposal Road. We’ll meet just inside the Environment Center. The walk is run by the N.J. Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society. Check meadowblog.net for last-minute updates and weather advisories. You will have to sign a standard liability release that is good for NJMC/BCAS events throughout the year.
