Fred Nisenholz passed along these two shots of a Red-tail hunting along Disposal Road from last weekend. (Thanks, Fred!)
Although today’s DeKorte Walk was officially canceled, a few brave souls participated anyway. We had 30 species in all, including nine duck species and exceptional looks at a Gray Ghost near the AmVets Carillon.

Welcome to the third in a series of Tuesday Teasers devoted to Losen Slote Creek Park, the site of our fifth annual Super Bird Sunday Walk on Feb. 2.
Between now and then, we will offer a different Losen Slote-based Teaser presented by the Bergen County Audubon Society. To participate, just e-mail your answer to the Teaser each week to Jim Wright at jim.wright@njmeadowlands.gov by each Tuesday at midnight, with “Teaser” marked in the subject field. The person with the highest number of correct answers will win something or other.
Today’s Twin Teasers are pictured above. What are they?
Today’s 10 a.m. walk at DeKorte Park is cancelled due to bad weather and difficult driving conditions for folks planning to attend. Sorry about that.
Have a happy holiday season. See you in 2014!
The free guided nature walk scheduled for DeKorte Park at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, Dec. 17) is still a go, but snow is predicted for much of the morning. Please check this blog for last-minute updates.
DeKorte’s trails are open but uncleared, so wear warm boots with good treads and walk carefully if the walk goes off as planned.
The walk is sponsored by the Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society. It is our last event of a very busy and successful 2013 schedule. Thank you for bring a part of it.

NJMC Naturalist Mike Newhouse and three of his bird-banding crew participated in the Meadowlands portion of a Christmas Bird Count yesterday.
The photo above was taken in North Arlington, and features swind-swept views of the Saw Mill Creek Wildlife management Area, Laurel Hill and that big town across the Hudson River.
These folks spot birds as well as they band them. We had 61 species in all. Highlights included A Rough-legged Hawk, a Snowy Owl, a Barn Owl and a Snow Snipe.
Full list and raptor pix later this week.
