We have three free walks in March, beginning with a Mill Creek Marsh walk on Sunday, March 2. We also have a Woodcock walk at Laurel Hill and a bird walk at harrier Meadow.
Needless to day, we are hoping that Mill Creek Marsh and Harrier Meadow have recovered from the winter snowstorms by then!
Please check this blog for updates.
Details of all three walks follow.
Sunday, March 2, 10 a.m.
First-Sunday-of-the Month Walk with the NJMC and BCAS
This free two-hour walk of Mill Creek Marsh in Secaucus features raptors, waterfowl and early spring migrants. We’ll meet at the marsh entrance at 10 a.m. (directions are on meadowblog.net in the left-hand column). The walk is run by the N.J. Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society. Check meadowblog.net for last-minute weather updates. You will have to sign a standard liability release that is good for NJMC/BCAS events throughout the year. Monday, March 17, 6:45 p.m.
Bonus: Woodcock Walk at Laurel Hill with the NJMC and BCAS
This free hour-long walk features a 30-minute walk around the park, followed by a low-keyed search for American woodcocks in one section of Laurel Hill County Park in Secaucus. We will also look for the Laurel Hill ravens, the black-crowned night herons and any other interesting birds we can find. We’ll meet in the ballfields parking lot at Laurel Hill at 6:45 p.m., or you can meet in DeKorte Park’s visitor’s parking lot and follow the NJMC’s Jim Wright — he’ll be leaving DeKorte promptly at 6:15 p.m. Dress for the weather — it can get especially cold and windy along the river! Check meadowblog.net for last-minute weather updates. You will have to sign a standard liability release that is good for NJMC/BCAS events throughout the year (if you haven’t done so already). To rsvp, contact Don Torino of the BCAS at greatauk4@aol.com or 201-230-4983.
Tuesday, March 18, 10 a.m. -noon.
Third-Tuesday-of-the-Month Bird Walk with the NJMC and BCAS
Beat the crowd! Celebrate the arrival of spring a day early with this Harrier Meadow spring bird walk in North Arlington. We’ll walk around the 70-acre natural area that is normally closed to the public and look for ospreys, killdeer and other spring arrivals, plus lingering winter waterfowl. The walk starts at 10 a.m. at Harrier Meadow, on Disposal Road near Schuyler Avenue. (Note: There may be construction vehicles on Valley Brook Avenue, so Harrier Meadow may be best reached by Schuyler Avenue). The walk is run by the N.J. Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society. Check meadowblog.net for last-minute updates. You will have to sign a standard liability release that is good for NJMC/BCAS events throughout the year. To rsvp, contact Don Torino of the BCAS at greatauk4@aol.com or 201-230-4983.
