BCAS and NJSEA Join Forces to Help American Kestrels

Many thanks to the BCAS for providing much-needed nest boxes for American Kestrels throughout the Meadowlands District! The NJSEA began installation of the brand new homes today and will continue placing more in the coming weeks. Great teamwork everyone!

“The American Kestrel is our smallest falcon and is listed as a Threatened Species in New Jersey due to  multiple factors such as  habitat loss and less available nesting locations,” said Don Torino, President of the BCAS.  “Their numbers have been in steep decline. Our joint project is to help this incredible little raptor here in the Meadowlands.”

Fantastic work! Is it recommended that homeowners in Bergen County place boxes in their yards (they look extremely high)? If so, We would provide our property.

YES ! very important for homeowners to put up nest boxes for chickadees , wrens, Screech owls, woodpeckers and others . the boxes you see in the photos are for American kestrels they need to be 15ft High, the kestrel is not a backyard nester, rather a large open grassland habitat
