Reminder: DeKorte Walk on Sunday

IMG_3941

Our next First-Sunday-of-the month Bird Walk with Bergen County Audubon Society is this Sunday — Sept. 6 — at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst.

The low-keyed event runs from 10 a.m. to noon.

We will look for shorebirds, waders, Ospreys and migrants – plus any butterflies we encounter. Park in the first lot and meet in front of the Meadowlands Environment Center (first building on your left).

The event will be held rain or shine. Lightning cancels. (Check this blog for updates.)

Tuesday Teaser 090108

Here's a different type of Tuesday Teaser, featuring one of the Route 3 bridges over the Hackensack River.

This photo includes a Peregrine Falcon. Where is she?

The answer could be useful for anyone taking one of our pontoon boat eco-cruises  or participating in an eco-cruise during the upcoming Meadowlands Festival of Birding, just 11 days away.

More Cormorant Antics

IMG_3670

This summer has been a bumper season for bizarre Double-crested Cormorant shots — from one being rescued after getting its neck wedged in an old  tide gate to one getting into a wrestling match with an eel.

This time around, we thought we'd show a sequence of what D.C. Cormorants do best — eat fish.

The sequence was photographed last week at DeKorte Park out by the Saw Mill Creek Trail.

Raptor Day

 IMG_4318

This was a good day for raptor sightings, including a Peregrine Falcon on the Route 3 Bridge (see next week's Tuesday Teaser).

We also saw a Northern Harrier over the Saw Mill Creek Wildlife Management Area  and eight Ospreys flying over the Richard P. Kane Natural Area by the Hackensack River in Carlstadt.

The day was topped off by this Red-tailed Hawk, on a Sycamore branch by the far parking lot at DeKorte Park.

We figure he was keeping an eye out for an unsuspecting squirrel.

(Thanks to Adam L. for pointing it out!)
