Don’t Forget: Free Nature Walk Sunday!
Our next free guided nature walk is this Sunday at 10 a.m. at Harrier Meadow in North Arlington, a 70-acre restored marsh.
We'll look for waterfowl, raptors and lingering migrants.

First-Sunday-of-the-Month Nature Walk with the NJMC and BCAS
This free two-hour guided nature walk will take us to the legendary Harrier Meadow in North Arlington. The 70-acre site, usually off limits to the public, features ponds and tidal impoundments and birds aplenty. We meet at 10 a.m. at the entrance to Harrier Meadow on Disposal Road. You can also meet us at the visitors’ parking lot at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst at 9:30 a.m. and carpool. The walk is run by the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society. Check meadowblog.net for last-minute weather updates. Bufflehead, Disposal Road
We had our first Bufflehead of the fall on Disposal Road this week, in the retention pond across from the AMVETS Carillon.
We included the shot of the mallard to show you just how small this female/juvenile is.

Kearny Marsh: The Latest From Ron Shields
Ron writes:
Despite strong northwest winds, there was plenty of action at the Kearny Marsh [last Saturday].
Images here are a very cooperative Marsh Wren (no crop), a female Blue-Winged Teal.
I also had multiple sightings of Bald Eagles. I'm assuming that the strong winds made for excellent flight conditions. (Thanks, Ron!) 
The Latest ‘Nature Next Door’ Column
Jim Wright of the Meadowlands Commission, who maintains this blog, writes the "Nature Next Door' column every other Thursday for The South Bergenite. His latest column is about the Meadowlands Nature Blog's latest milestone.
This week, the Meadowlands Nature Blog – meadowblog.net — reaches a major milestone. In less than two-and-a-half years, the blog has reached 200,000 page views, mostly on buzz generated by word of mouth.
The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission asked me to create the blog in the summer of 2008 for two reasons: To give the public an easy way to learn about nature and free nature-related NJMC events and to celebrate the district’s amazing environmental resurgence.
From the beginning, the idea has been to post a new item about nature in the Meadowlands every weekday, using striking photography to underscore the natural beauty that abounds here – and to refute those stubborn stereotypes of the region as one big dump.
Along the way, the blog has expanded to alert the public when rare birds arrive and to showcase local photographers’ timely photos – from amazing birds in the Kearny Marsh to a misty morning along the Marsh Discovery Trail at DeKorte Park. We want readers of the blog to not only enjoy it but to participate in it.

Flyway Gallery: November
The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission’s 2010 Employee Art Exhibit will be on display at the Meadowlands Environment Center’s Flyway Gallery during November. The show runs from Wednesday, Nov. 3 through Thursday, Dec. 2. The Meadowlands Environment Center is located in DeKorte Park, the home of the NJMC.
The environmentally themed show includes nature and landscape photography by Commission staffers Lou Coviello (above) and Jim Wright , as well as digital inkjet prints by Lisa Cameron.
