The Observatory’s August Schedule

IMG_5829The William D. McDowell Observatory in DeKorte Park has an exciting month of programming in August.

Free public access is from 8:30 to 10:30 on Monday and Wednesday nights this month — weather permitting, of course.

Dress for the weather; with the dome open, you are basically outside.

Each evening at least two major objects in the night sky will be viewed, plus one or two other celestial objects or events depending on the observing conditions.

I first saw it It below the power lines and after heron survey went to other side of pool to get closer.

A Nifty DeKorte Park Walk This Morning

DSCN0079-001A big thanks to the more than three dozen folks (including the shady characters abive) who participated in this morning’s First-Sunday-of-the-Month walk in DeKorte Park, brought to you by the N.J. Meadowlands Commission and IMG_9924the Bergen County Audubon Society,

Bird highlights included a Bald Eagle, a Peregrine, and some arriving shorebirds. Butterfly highlights included a Mourning Cloak, a Summer Azure and a nice fresh Monarch.

Later this week, we will publish the full list of 11 species of butterflies and 31 species of birds that were seen.
