Tree Swallows: The Untold Story

Everybody thinks that Tree Swallows are so sweet and nice and beautiful. Not necessarily so.

Consider the photo above, which didn’t quite make the final cut for “The Nature of the Meadowlands.”

You should’ve seen them at Mill Creek Marsh yesterday. I was out there for a nest box survey, and every single swallow in the marsh was either mating or eating (about 2/3 of the swallows were eating, the rest were mating). I only saw one fight, though–one male jumped another while the second male was mating, and they had a little dogfight around the nest box. The second male eventually chased off the interloper.
