DeKorte Snowy Owls: Part Four

As this blog reported on Sunday, DeKorte Park was fortunate to have at least two and perhaps three Snowy Owls visit the park over the weekend. We were also pleased to hear that almost everyone stayed on the trails and was mindful of keeping a safe distance from the birds.

We have received many first-rate Snowy Owl shots from last weekend, including these shots taken by Kevin Brown.   (Thanks, Kevin!)

Lisa Ann Fanning has reported seeing a fireball over the former Kingsland Landfill last weekend, only to discover it was part of a larger phenomenon.

The American Meteor Society (AMS) says that hundreds of witnesses have filed reports of a large, bright, long-lasting fireball – an exceptionally bright meteor – seen over the U.S. East (New England) on Sunday evening, January 12, 2014.

Witnessed reported the brightness greater than the full moon. The fireball was seen from primarily Connecticut, but witnesses from Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island also reported seeing the fireball.

Our Next Free Walk: Tuesday@Laurel Hill

DSCN4113-001

Our next free walk is Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m. at Laurel Hill County Park in Secaucus.  Last year’s January Laurel Hill walk produced Horned Larks, roughly 30 roosting Black-crowned Night Herons and a dogfight between a Peregrine and a Red-tail.

Here’s a link to the full list.

Details follow.Tuesday, Jan. 21, 10 a.m.
Third-Tuesday-of-the-Month Bird Walk with the NJMC and BCAS
This free two-hour guided nature walk will take place at Laurel Hill County Park in Secaucus. We’ll look for Ravens, raptors, waterfowl on the Hackensack River, and any other birds we can find. We meet at the big parking lot by the Laurel Hill ball fields at 10 a.m.  The walk is run by the N.J. Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society. Check meadowblog.net for last-minute weather updates. You will have to sign a standard liability release that is good for NJMC/BCAS events throughout the year. To rsvp, contact Don Torino of the BCAS at greatauk4@aol.com or 201-230-4983.

We have received many first-rate Snowy Owl shots from last weekend, including this shot taken by Julia Fuhr from inside the Marshview Pavilion, with the marsh in the background and One World Trade Center in the distance. (Thanks, Julia!)

We will post two more Snowy Owl posts today.
