Today’s Birding By Boat Trip

IMG_9509Great day, great group, great birds. We apologize to all the participants for the overabundance of Diamondback Terrapins (a smattering are pictured above) that were constantly spoiling everyone’s view of the shoreline.

Highlights included Clapper Rail, young Peregrines, YC and BC Night Herons, and lots of shorebirds. We also had a Boat-tailed Grackle, below.

Will post a full list later this week.

What a Moth Night!

DSCN9348Some 150 people attended last night’s 3rd annual Moth Night at DeKorte Park. They got to hear a great talk about moths by National Moth Week’s Elena Tartaglia, and then got to see some really cool moths.

Patrick Carney of Bergen County Audubon Society was nice enough to share his photos of some of the cool moths we saw last night.

If you click on each of the small pix below, you’ll see a larger shot of the moth, labeled.  There are some crazy and beautiful moths.

(Thanks, Patrick,  thanks to all who attended, and a huge thanks to the wonderful folks at National Moth Week!)

Great Spangled Fritillary

Mickey and Elaine Raine passed along some of the butterfly pix they took at DeKorte this past weekend. We hope it’s a sneak preview for Sunday. The great Spangled Fritillary is especially nice!

(Thanks, Mickey and Elaine!)
