DSCN6337One of our best walks of the year is the autumn Harrier Meadow Walk and Bird-banding Demonstration, featuring the NJMC’s Mike Newhouse (above) and his awesome band of bird-banders.

The free walk, sponsored by the NJMC and the Bergen Audubon Society, is next Tuesday (Sept. 16) from 10 a.m. to noon.

Third-Tuesday-of-the-Month Bird Walk with the NJMC and BCAS
This walk starts with a bird-banding demonstration by NJMC Naturalist Mike Newhouse at the entrance to Harrier Meadow in North Arlington – where you’ll learn all about why the commission bands birds and what it has learned, and you’ll get some amazing up-close looks at birds. We’ll then walk around the 70-acre natural area, which is normally closed to the public, and look for herons, egrets, shorebirds, and ospreys and other raptors. Harrier Meadow is on Disposal Road near Schuyler Avenue. The walk is run by the N.J. Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society. Check meadowblog.net for last-minute updates. You will have to sign a standard liability release that is good for NJMC/BCAS events throughout the year. To rsvp, contact Don Torino of the BCAS at greatauk4@aol.com or 201-230-4983.
