Bird Walk Schedule for the Rest of the Year

For those who like to plan ahead, we are posting the schedule for our First Sunday and Third Tuesday free guided walks through the end of 2013. The walks are sponsored by Bergen County Audubon Society and the N.J. Meadowlands Commission.

Sunday, Sept. 1, 10 a.m.-noon.
First Sunday-of-the-Month Bird Walk with the NJMC and BCAS
Enjoy nature on Labor Day weekend by joining us on this free two-hour guided nature walk in DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst. We’ll walk around parts of the park, looking for shorebirds, raptors and other birds. The walk starts at 10 a.m. outside the Meadowlands Environment Center. The walk is run by the N.J. Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society. Check meadowblog.net for last-minute weather updates. Tuesday, Sept. 17,  10 a.m.-noon.
Third-Tuesday-of-the-Month Bird Walk with the NJMC and BCAS
This walk starts with a bird-banding demonstration by NJMC Naturalist Mike Newhouse  at the entrance to Harrier Meadow in North Arlington – where you’ll learn all about why  the commission bands birds and  what it has learned,  and you’ll get some amazing up-close looks at birds. We’ll then walk around the 70-acre natural area, which is normally closed to the public, and look for herons, egrets, shorebirds, and ospreys and other raptors. Harrier Meadow is on  Disposal Road near Schuyler Avenue.  The walk is run by the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society. This free two-hour walk of Mill Creek Marsh in Secaucus features raptors, waterfowl and fall migrants. We’ll meet at the marsh entrance at 10 a.m. (directions are on meadowblog.net in the left-hand column). The walk is run by the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society. Check meadowblog.net for last-minute weather updates. You will have to sign a standard liability release that is good for NJMC/BCAS events throughout the year. Tuesday, Oct. 15, 10 a.m.
Third-Tuesday-of-the Month Walk with the NJMC and BCAS

This free two-hour nature walk starts at the entrance to Losen Slote Creek Park in Little Ferry. We’ll look for warblers and other fall birds – and pick up any litter we find  along the way. The walk is run by the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society. Check meadowblog.net for last-minute weather updates. By popular demand, we are hosting a Harrier Meadow walk on a weekend.  The 70-acre natural area is normally closed to the public, and we never know what amazing birds we might see there – beginning with a Bald Eagle or two and other raptors. Harrier Meadow is on  Disposal Road near Schuyler Avenue.  The walk is run by the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society.
